Is SEO Dead Because of AI? What San Antonio Businesses Should Do in 2026

No, SEO is not dead. The click moved. AI answers still pull from pages search engines can crawl and trust. Here is the three-layer plan we use, plus a 15 minute self-check.

Is SEO Dead Because of AI? What San Antonio Businesses Should Do in 2026

Short answer: no. SEO is not dead, but the click moved. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity still build their answers from web pages they can crawl, understand and trust. Google itself says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO. What changed is where people get the answer and how often they click. The businesses that win in 2026 do solid SEO, write pages that answer real questions clearly, and make sure the rest of the web agrees about who they are.

Every few months someone declares SEO dead. In 2026 the claim is that AI ate search. It is a fair worry. More people get answers directly from an AI summary or a chatbot, and fewer click through to websites. But the answer still has to come from somewhere. That somewhere is your site, your listings and what others say about you online.

What actually changed

Three things are different now:

  1. The answer appears before the click. AI Overviews and AI Mode summarize results at the top of Google. ChatGPT and Perplexity answer in a chat. A searcher can get what they need without visiting any site.
  2. Recommendations are shortlists. Ask an AI assistant for "the best roofer in San Antonio" and you get a handful of names, not ten blue links. Being on that shortlist matters more than being sixth on a page.
  3. Your reputation is assembled from many sources. AI tools blend your website with your Google Business Profile, reviews, directories, news and community discussions. If those sources disagree, the AI gets it wrong. We wrote about that in why AI gets business information wrong.

What did not change

Google has been clear about this. Its guidance says its generative AI features run on the same core systems as regular Search: crawling, indexing and ranking helpful pages. From Google's perspective, optimizing for AI features is still SEO. There is no secret AI-only markup that replaces the basics. We broke down Google's own documentation in what Google actually says about AEO and GEO.

So the fundamentals still decide who gets cited:

  • Pages search engines can crawl and index.
  • Content that answers the question clearly and is genuinely useful.
  • A fast, mobile-friendly site.
  • Accurate business details everywhere.
  • Real reviews and a trusted reputation.

The three-layer plan

We use three labels for the work. They overlap, and that is fine. You can read the full comparison in GEO vs AEO vs SEO.

Layer 1: SEO, the foundation

This is the part that never went away. Clean technical setup, a page for each service you sell, local pages that match how people search, a well-maintained Google Business Profile, and a steady flow of reviews. For local businesses, the Map Pack is still one of the highest-value spots on Google.

Layer 2: AEO, answer the question

Answer engine optimization means writing so an AI can lift a clear answer. Put a direct one or two sentence answer at the top of key pages. Use the questions customers actually ask as headings. Keep facts like prices, service areas and hours specific and up to date. Add FAQ sections where they genuinely help. Our answers library is built this way.

Layer 3: GEO, be the entity everyone agrees on

Generative engine optimization is about how AI tools understand your business as a whole. Make your name, address, phone and services consistent across your site, Google, Bing, Apple Maps and directories. Earn mentions on trusted local sites. Use clear structured data about your organization. For AI tools beyond Google, a simple llms.txt file can help them find your most important pages, though Google has said it does not need special files like this.

A 15 minute self-check

Grab a coffee and run this today:

  1. Ask the AIs. In ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, ask "best [your service] in San Antonio" and "who is [your business name]?" Note whether you appear and whether the details are right.
  2. Google yourself. Search your business name and your main service plus "San Antonio." Check the Map Pack and any AI Overview.
  3. Check your Google Business Profile. Categories, hours, phone, website link, recent photos and posts.
  4. Read your homepage as a stranger. Within five seconds, can you tell what you do, where you do it and how to contact you?
  5. Check your service pages. Does each main service have its own page with a direct answer near the top?
  6. Spot-check consistency. Compare your address and phone on your site, Google, Yelp and Facebook. They should match exactly.
  7. Look at reviews. Are they recent, and do you respond?

If three or more of these come up short, you have work to do, and it is mostly SEO work.

What to stop doing

  • Thin content at volume. Publishing short, generic posts every week stopped working. One genuinely useful answer beats ten thin ones.
  • Buying AI hacks. If a pitch contradicts Google's published guidance, ask for proof.
  • Ignoring your listings. An outdated phone number on one directory can end up in an AI answer.
  • Measuring only clicks. Track calls, bookings, direction requests and whether AI tools mention you, not just sessions.

When to bring in help

You can handle a lot of this yourself. Bring in a partner when you do not have time to keep it consistent, when the technical side is beyond your team, or when competitors keep showing up in AI answers and you do not. Our AI visibility service and the Visibility Engine were built for exactly that, and we track how San Antonio businesses show up across AI engines on our public tracker.

FAQ

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. AI search tools build their answers from web pages they can crawl and trust, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. What changed is that more people get the answer without clicking, so being the cited source matters more.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO makes your site findable and trusted by search engines. AEO shapes content so AI can lift a clear answer. GEO makes sure AI tools understand your business consistently across the web. In practice they overlap and work best together.

Do I need to do anything special for ChatGPT?

Mostly the same fundamentals: clear pages, consistent business details and a good reputation across the web. ChatGPT and other assistants also draw on third-party sources, so mentions on trusted sites help.

How do I know if AI tools recommend my business?

Ask them directly with the questions your customers would ask, and check the details they give. Our free AI audit gives you a quick score, and the San Antonio tracker shows how local businesses appear over time.

Should I still publish blog posts in 2026?

Yes, if they answer real questions in depth. Fewer, more useful posts beat frequent thin ones.
